1. BEING LATE

2. DRESSING INAPPROPRIATELY

Carrying out a little research on the organization can provide insights on their dress code or help you choose the clothing that fits the position you are applying for. However, business casual is a good fit; it allows you to appear conservative, presentable and professional.
3. LACK OF PREPARATION OR INADEQUATE PREPARATION
Lack of preparation for an interview can ruin your possibilities of getting hired. The question, “What do you know about the company?” is a common question asked during interviews. Many applicants who have all the qualifications for a particular job ruin their chances of getting employed because they have no idea about the organization, what it stands for, or the services they offer. Do not bring the topic of remuneration up during an interview, unless the interviewer brings this to the table. Asking this question may show that you are interested in the money alone and not the job. This may create a bad impression.
8. LACK OF PERSONALITY
The selection process for a job position in an organization goes beyond having the required certificates or qualifications. Companies tend to receive numerous applications from qualified candidates for a vacant position. As a result, they tend to go for individuals with good personality, interpersonal relationships and connection capabilities. From the moment you enter the building, your behavior is being assessed either consciously or subconsciously. Therefore, how you see yourself or carry yourself, alongside how you relate to people, matters.
9. SETTING YOURSELF TO FAIL ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Almost everyone on the globe belongs to one online social group or the other. With the use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media applications, companies can now get information about an applicant by going through their accounts. When they come across things on your page that don’t reflect well on you, such as violent posts, offensive posts or posts about unsuccessful interviews you have gone for, they tend to lose interest.
10. CREATING A POOR FIRST IMPRESSION
Creating a good first impression really matters; it can help you in the interview process by allowing the interviewer to overlook imperfections or mistakes in your responses or answers. Most interview decisions are made upon first contact with a candidate. Therefore, turn the tides in your favor by making a good first impression.
11. GIVING WRONG ANSWERS
Giving wrong answers to questions can increase the possibility of you not being hired. Do not be in a hurry to answer a question. Ensure you listen carefully, understand the questions and take your time to think about what to say before answering.
Let’s go through this scenario in an interview. A statement made by an interviewer: “The point of sales and marketing requires skills and experience in cold calling and technical know-how.” A candidate was asked about his opinion. The applicant’s response was, “I do not like cold calling, and I also lack information about sales and marketing.” The applicant’s answer or response is apparently wrong; such answer has ruined the candidate’s chance of getting hired.
12. BADMOUTHING PREVIOUS EMPLOYER
Even if you were not satisfied or pleased with your former boss, coworkers, or work environment, do not make the mistake of saying bad things about them. In some situations, the interviewer may be familiar with your previous employer; the world is actually a small place. Such acts can also portray you as someone who will speak evil of the company if they decide to let you.
In a job interview, you have to display true professionalism. Ensure you inform the interviewer on how you can work well with other people and control conflicts maturely and effectively, instead of talking bad about people’s incompetence.
13. ASKING THE WRONG QUESTIONS OR NOT ASKING QUESTIONS
An interviewer may see you not asking questions as a sign of you not being interested in the job. Also, asking the wrong questions can ruin your chances of getting hired. Questions concerning salary, vacations, promotions, and other benefits are not usually well-received and sends the wrong message. Questions like this may show that you are interested only in the rewards the company has to offer and not the job.
Instead, ask questions such as information about the job, questions you came across while researching the organization or about their code of conduct.
14. FAILURE TO FOLLOW UP
Most applicants tend to make this mistake; I am also guilty. A follow up after an interview shows the employer how interested you are in the position you applied for. After an interview, you are expected to show appreciation for the interview and express your interest in the position you applied for.
However, if you are informed you did not succeed after the interview, do not lose hope or see this as a time to regret. Instead, see this as a challenge and an opportunity to correct your mistakes, improve on yourself and prepare the best way you can for upcoming interviews.
